Sideways to the Sun (Feature Film)
Sideways to the Sun is a poignant, visually poetic drama about grief, voyeurism, and the search for meaning in a disconnected world.
After a devastating personal loss, celebrated photographer Alex Rivera withdraws from his successful career and spirals into isolation. In an attempt to feel something again, he begins a secret project: photographing strangers at their happiest, most intimate moments — proposals on London Bridge, family reunions in parks, lovers laughing in the rain. Using a long lens, he captures joy from a distance, never interacting, never revealing himself.
What begins as a coping mechanism slowly becomes an obsession. As Alex collects these stolen fragments of other people’s happiness, he starts to question his own emptiness. The more beauty he documents, the more he feels himself fading. His carefully constructed emotional distance begins to crumble when he forms an unexpected connection with Lena, a free-spirited woman who challenges his detachment and forces him to confront the life he’s been avoiding.
Visually striking and emotionally layered, Sideways to the Sun explores the ethics of observation, the seductive danger of living through others, and the quiet courage required to step back into the light. It asks whether we can truly witness joy without participating in it — and whether healing can ever be found at a safe distance.
The original screenplay has been optioned and is in active development with a respected independent production company. It is being positioned as a thoughtful, auteur-driven drama with strong international appeal.
With its meditative pace, rich character study, and haunting visual language, Sideways to the Sun marks Darrell James as a writer with a distinctive cinematic voice — capable of blending emotional depth with subtle, intelligent storytelling.
